Italy

After my trip to Italy, I can confidently say it’s one of the best places I’ve ever visited. The architecture, the rich history, the fashion, the food, everything about it was simply amazing.

As a huge fan of gladiator movies like 300, Spartacus and Hercules, visiting the Colosseum in person was an experience beyond words. Standing there, I could almost feel the energy of the gladiatorial battles that took place centuries ago. It gave me a sense of how real those ancient stories were and made me reflect on just how much the world has changed since then.

Italy felt like a living, breathing movie set. The cobbled streets reminded me of scenes from the Disney movie Ratatouille (for those who know exactly what I’m talking about). It was like stepping into a scene right out of a film.

One of the most exciting parts of the trip was when I went on a mountain bike ride along the ancient Appian Way. This legendary road, which runs from Rome to Campania and all the way to southern Italy, is the first and most famous of the Roman roads. I hadn’t ridden a bike in years, but the combination of adventure and history was too irresistible. The road is lined with ruins and beautiful countryside, and as I pedalled along it, I could feel the weight of history in every turn. The experience was exhilarating and brought out the adventurer in me.

When I visited, Europe was experiencing a heatwave, which didn’t pose much of a problem for my family and me, as we’re from the Caribbean. The warm weather suited us perfectly.

The prices in Italy were also surprisingly reasonable, especially for the quality of experiences and food you get. However, the pasta was something I didn’t quite expect. In our minds, Italy is synonymous with the best pasta you’ll ever taste, but the reality is a little different. The pasta there is made the traditional way, with plenty of olive oil and natural, simple sauces. While it’s probably healthier, I personally don’t enjoy oily foods, and I have to admit, the pasta wasn’t really my cup of tea. However, the pizza was everything I had hoped for and more. I honestly really enjoyed the pizza. It was flavourful, and the natural ingredients definitely worked in its favour, unlike the pasta for me. Each bite was a perfect combination of taste, texture, and authenticity—definitely something I would have again and again.

One feature I found incredibly thoughtful was the availability of free water dispensers throughout the city. These stations offered either cold regular or sparkling water, which was a lifesaver during the heat. The only catch? You have to bring your own bottle. But it was a great way to stay hydrated while exploring.

Italy truly captured my heart, and I can’t wait to return to experience more of its beauty and culture.
